How to access a website: domain, hosting and browser
You reach a website by typing its address, the domain, into a browser. For the publisher, access also means domain, hosting, admin panel and credentials.
Key points
- For the visitor: you type the domain into the browser, or arrive from a link or a search engine.
- For the publisher: you need a domain, hosting and access to the admin panel.
- A site is not a file on your computer: it is a set of files served by a server.
For a visitor, accessing a website means typing the domain into a browser (for example eneawork.it) or arriving from a link, a search result or a QR code. For the publisher, access needs three things: domain, hosting and credentials.
What happens when you type an address
- The browser asks DNS which server answers for that domain.
- The server returns the page files: HTML, CSS, images.
- The browser builds the page and shows the security state (HTTPS).

For the publisher: three kinds of access
| Access | What it is for | Where you manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | The address of the site | Registrar (for example a domain registrar) |
| Hosting | The space and the server that deliver the files | Hosting panel |
| Administration | Editing the content | CMS or project repository |
The three can sit on one service or on three different providers. Keeping them apart cuts risk: if the hosting goes down, the domain stays yours.
Restricted access: the private area
A private area is not “the site”: it is a part of the site protected by credentials. It does not make the site safer by itself; safety depends on how passwords, sessions and permissions are handled.
If the site does not open
- Check that the domain has not expired.
- Check that the hosting answers and that the HTTPS certificate is valid.
- Try from another network: the problem may be local.
- Read the error: 404 is a missing page, 500 is a server error.

Frequently asked questions
How do you access a website?
From a browser, by typing the domain or opening a link. No special program is involved.
Do I need a program to open a site?
No, an up-to-date browser is enough. Editing it needs access to the panel or the repository.
What does it take to publish a site?
A domain, hosting and the site files. Administrative access is what lets you change it.
How do I get into my own site?
Use the address of the CMS or hosting admin panel, with the credentials of your account.
Why do I see “not secure”?
The HTTPS certificate is invalid or expired. Renew it at the hosting provider or the CDN.
