Building a free website: what it really takes (and when free stops being enough)

A free website is possible, but price is not the only variable: domain, hosting, template and who updates the content all count.

"Create a free website" is one of the most searched phrases in Italy. Together with make a free website, create a website and free websites it forms a block of thousands of searches a month. The catch is that "free" describes the price, not the result. Very different things share that word, from a builder on a third-level domain to a hand-written static site that costs nothing forever.

This guide separates the levels of free, says what it really takes to put a presentable site online, and marks the point where the early saving starts to cost you, in time, in speed or in Google visibility.

The three levels of "free"

What you really need, in order of importance

Before choosing a tool, settle four decisions. Without them, any free builder produces a site that does not work for you.

Building a free site from a template: what to check

The fastest start is a template: a page already put together (hero, sections, contacts) that you adapt. The gap between a template that works and one you have to rebuild shows in three details. How many sections can you remove without breaking the layout? Can the text really be edited without touching code? Does the page stay fast after your edits? A template that is too rigid forces the content to bend to the shape instead of the other way round.

When the template is built from separate components (a hero, a feature grid, a pricing strip), you can change one piece without touching the others. It is the difference between a tailored suit and one you have to alter. In our catalogue every template is exactly that: an assembly of components with a live preview.

      When free stops being enough

        The route I recommend

Start with your own domain and a single page that answers one question: "what do you offer, to whom, how do I reach you". If the project holds, add the pages you need, not all of them at once. If the site is your livelihood, consider a component setup: it costs a little time up front and saves you every time you add a section, because you reuse tested pieces instead of starting from a blank page.

Free, read this way, is not a fallback. It is the right starting point when you know what you are buying. The problem is never the price, it is the dependence on a platform that decides for you what comes next.

        Frequently asked questions

Can you really build a free website?

Yes. There are three routes: free builders on a third-level address, free services on your own domain (you pay only the domain, 10-15 € a year), and static code sites, where the only cost is the domain and any minimal hosting. Free covers the fee, not the time you put in.

What is the difference between a free site and a free site on your own domain?

The domain. On a third-level address the site lives inside the platform that hosts it. On your own domain it answers at an address that stays yours if you change supplier. That is what decides whether the project is temporary or not.

How much does a .it domain cost?

Usually 10 to 15 € a year for registration or renewal, with a few euro of difference between registrars. It is the one genuinely unavoidable cost: without a domain the site sits at a borrowed address.

Does a free site rank on Google?

It can be indexed, but ranking depends on content, speed and technical control. On a closed platform you cannot manage titles, structured data, redirects and sitemaps as you want. On your own code or an open CMS you have full control.

Is a free builder better than an HTML template?

The builder wins if you must publish within an hour and will not touch code. The HTML (or component) template wins if speed, markup control and reusable sections matter. The test is how much this site matters to you over the next two years.

What should the first version of a site contain?

Who you are, what you do, who you do it for, where you operate, how to get in touch, three real examples of work or product, and a legal page (privacy and cookies). Five pages are enough; the rest gets added when needed.

How long does it take to build a free website?

With a builder and a template: one evening for the structure, a few days for the copy. With a component template and content already written: half a day for the first page. Writing the content is what really eats the time, not the build.

Can I move a free site to another provider?

It depends on the platform. Closed builders usually export the content only, not the layout, so the site has to be rebuilt. With static code or an open CMS you move files and database and the site stays identical.

Is a free site enough for a business?

To be found and contacted, yes, provided it has your domain, clear copy and working contact details. It stops being enough when you need bookings, payments, private areas, or when the site has to carry campaigns. Then a proper platform is an operating cost, not a luxury.

        Is a free site secure?

A static site has no database and no admin panel to attack, so the risk surface is tiny. A builder or a CMS has more parts to update. Either way you need HTTPS, which comes with a free certificate, and a correct privacy page.

Do you need a VAT number to build a website?

For a personal site or a portfolio, no. If the site serves a business, invoicing follows the rules of that business: the site is a tool, not a trade in itself. If you build a site for somebody else, invoicing is mandatory.

What is the difference between "free" and "for free"?

In practice it is the same request, and Google treats the two as variants of one intent. Only the register changes: "for free" is more formal, "free" is what people actually type.

Where can you build a free site?

On a service that gives you a subdomain and free hosting, in exchange for limits on the domain, advertising and features.

What is the best free website?

It depends on the limits you accept: subdomain, banner, storage or features. No free service includes everything.
