Design systems
UI kit, component library or design system: what you actually need
Three words the market treats as synonyms, but they solve different problems. Here is what each one delivers, and when a UI kit is enough.
Key points
- A UI kit is a file, a component library is code, a design system is a contract.
- The choice depends on the handover, not on the screenshot.
- EneUI indexes 111,985 components from 1,472 libraries: it is a catalogue, not a ready-made design system.
Sales pages use UI kit, component library and design system as if they meant the same thing. They don't. A UI kit is a design file; a component library is installable code; a design system is the set of rules that keeps the two aligned after the first restyling.
Picking the wrong layer costs more than picking none: you buy a kit nobody implements, or a library nobody can design.
What each layer delivers
| Layer | What it delivers | Who uses it | When it is enough |
|---|---|---|---|
| UI kit | Frames, variants, text styles | Design | Prototype or validation |
| Component library | Code with props and states | Development | A product you have to ship |
| Design system | Tokens, rules, releases | Design + development | Several teams or frequent redesigns |
The handover test
Ask who receives the file next. If a developer has to rebuild every state by eye, the UI kit is the wrong buy. If a designer has to redraw every component after a rebrand, the component library alone won't save you. If two teams ship buttons at different heights, the design system is missing.
A catalogue is not a design system
EneUI indexes 111,985 components from 1,472 libraries. That helps you pick a component or compare styles, but it doesn't decide your spacing scale, your focus ring or your release process. The design system stays yours.
The sequence that avoids useless purchases
- Define six base tokens: colour, type, space, radius, focus, motion.
- Pick a component library that respects those tokens, not the other way round.
- Add a UI kit only if the design team has to explore before the code exists.
- Write the release rules: who updates what, when, and with which test.

Frequently asked questions
Are a UI kit and a component library the same thing?
No. A UI kit is a design file; a component library is installable code. Buying one doesn't get you the other.
Does a small team need a design system?
Not at first. Shared tokens and three base components are enough. A full design system arrives when two products or two teams start to drift.
Is EneUI a design system?
No, it's a catalogue of components and libraries. You can use it to pick pieces, but the rules of your system stay yours.
How many components do you need to start?
It depends on the screen. A dashboard needs button, input, select, card, table, dialog and toast; add the rest when a page asks for it.
Is Figma or code better first?
For a new product with a small team, code first. For a redesign, Figma first if the visual language really has to change.
